Vegas – Grand Canyon

Virgin had started a new direct flight from my home town to Vegas and a friend of mine had booked a trip , so as i had not seen him in a while and Vegas only being a short flight from where i am now i decided to meet him there .With it being suck a long flight for him he had arranged a 7 day stay in Vegas , thats a quite a long time to stay in Vegas so we had to plan more than just the usual drinking , Gambling and general partying .

one thing i just had to see was the Grand Canyon so we booked a helicopter tour to go see it , i absolutely wanted to land and walk around int he canyon so we booked a flight with Mustang Helicopter tours out of Henderson NV . Mustang picked us up from our hotel and took us out to Henderson Airport a very slick operation . Landing in the Grand Canyon is amazing , we have all seen the Canyon on TV but you don’t realize the sides are 4000ft high which just makes it breath taking .

whilst in Vegas we also took in a couple of shows, the comedy club and David Copperfield both where really good .

Another thing that we just had to do , with us being from the UK we don’t get much contact with Guns so the Gun Shop was an amazing experience shooting guns we had only ever seen on TV …what an experience .

Hoover Dam is amazing !

So 7 days in Vegas didn’t end up to be too long , i think it was just the right amount of time to fit it all in.

Arctic Trip Video

I have finally got around to making a short video for my Arctic Trip in 2010.

i had so much video footage and pictures that it takes some thinking of what way to put them together. The video was taken with my first video camera a Samsung flash standard def camera and as this was my first real try at videoing a trip or anything i was not very good at it all though i ended up with a lot of video clips, there are not much usable footage and then there is the danger of making a video too long and boring so i wanted to keep this short and sweet.

I left out a lot of the camping videos and scenery panning and just used photography to show the scenery.

Tho my video editing skills are not very good, in fact i say that i am very good at editing videos badly.I hope i managed to make a video that portrays the essence of the trip and is not overly boring?

A beautiful winter day

Winter can be mostly grey and a little down heartening but those crisp clean sunny winter days are just hard to beat .

Two empty benches looking out over the ocean on a sunny winter day.

Lights are on but no one is home.

This weekend saw the one year anniversary of last years Winter Olympic Games  and to mark the occasion the city decided to celebrate by recreating some of last years party’s in particular the light show in Yaletown aptly names “Illuminate Yaletown” . This being my part of the city and of course the fact that I missed last years festivities I wanted to see what all the hype was about .

IMG_2227It was not really as much of a party as I had thought it would have been but it was fun none the less. the jest of the event is they use light as a media for art , projecting images on walls or objects creating moving images and light shows. if you are not familiar with Yaletown in Vancouver it is a historic part of the city with old warehouses made in to businesses and cool apartments and there is a n old Rail terminus called “The Round House” named after the railway turntable there . in the Roundhouse is an old steam locomotive which was the scene of one of my most favorite of the exhibits an interactive balloon light show and also an idea whereby you throw small sticky light things on the the old steam train to uniquely decorate it for the occasion.

IMG_1980there where numerous projections on to buildings, big ones small ones , colorful ones some that where kind of silhouette puppet shows . all good fun until you get the the local car dealership Mini of Yaletown and see that they had gone all out , not only did they have fire dancers outside but inside they had arrange a white mine and used it as the canvas to project a light show to music in which the car changed color to music. Just awesome!

it was really a nice evening out but there wasn’t as much as I had thought there would be even though some streets where closed off there was only one street vendor , no hotdogs! they could have done so much more . maybe next year .

Hawaii Sunsets

Here in Hawaii for the holidays to get out of the horrible weather back home. I love the sunsets and the light at this time of year especially when there are clouds and it is a bit hazy and the light refracts here are a few pics I took recently of a particularly ordinary sunset.

Last Day of Summer?

It has been such a beautiful day here today . Everyone has been saying this is the last day of summer , i am not sure if that is on the calendar and actually is or whether they are just referring to it being nice and we are heading in to winter .Well you can certainly feel that chill in the air in the mornings and evenings but today was really a beautiful day i just had to go for a walk this morning and take some pictures.

I really love this time of year , late summer early fall , the chill in the mornings but heat in the day . the air just seems so clean and fresh and i think it really reminds me of being a kid especially as the nights start to draw in . i remember collecting firewood for bonfire night  or getting ready for Halloween . also this time of year is just perfect for walking and hiking , seeing all the trees changing and the cooler air lends itself to  you feeling more comfortable and not too hot out on the trail.

Next week i am hoping to get out and do some hiking / exploring and camping which usually makes my posts happen a bit more often 🙂
